The sermon text for this Lord’s Day is Proverbs 1:7-19. Here are some questions to assist you in preparing for this sermon.
1. What’s the connection between verse 7 and verses 8-9?
2. Does every parents always provide righteous teaching and instruction? Does verse 8 establish a universal obligation for children to obey every aspect of their parents’ teaching and instruction? What if the parents instruct their child to do something overtly sinful? How should the child respond to this instruction?
3. Read verse 10. In what ways can sin/sinners be enticing to believers? Is it sinful to be enticed by sinners? Consider James 1:14-15.
4. Why would Solomon warn his child about those who plunder and kill the innocent? Shouldn’t parents try to protect their children from this type of exposure to evil? Don’t we want our children to set their minds only on “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things?” (Phil 4:8)
5. According to verse 19, what’s the end result of those who are greedy for unjust gain? Explain this in your own words.
